Skin Support According to the Five Elements

According to TCM, the eyes really are the window to the soul, and the face tells all. Acting as a mirror to the outside world, the face reveals what is happening within ourselves, whether it be physically or emotionally. Through signs like under eye bags, dry skin, red spots, and pimples, the skin on the face reflects our internal workings and can be beneficial to healing.

To heal properly, it is important to consider the 5 element types that people fall into based on their personality and disposition. The 5 elements are wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, and each type has its own associated season, body part, emotions, characteristics, and diet. By supporting your organs through high quality food and processing emotions, the skin will be clear and healthy.

Blocks in Qi, organ stagnation, trapped emotions, and poor diet can cause physical symptoms that reflect on the skin as pimples, dryness, itchiness, paleness, or redness. To help diagnose what your skin symptoms may be associated with, consult a face map. Try acupuncture, cupping, facial gua sha, and proper hydration to aid the healing of your skin externally.

Wood

Characteristics: Associated with spring, the liver and gallbladder, positive emotions like love, compassion, and growth, negative emotions like frustration, anger, procrastination, and indecision. While balanced, wood individuals are goal setters, high achievers, and planners that accomplish what they set out to do. When unbalanced, feelings of stress lead to irritability and a short temper. Physical signs of an imbalance include headaches, tension in the neck and shoulders, and waking up regularly between 1 and 3 am. Excess feelings of anger and frustration build up heat in the body, and if not processed and released, can manifest as a red rash or pimples on the skin.

Food: The best diet is a light diet to cleanse the body of excess fats that can clog the liver. Flavors like sweet and pungent are most common due to the young stage of plant growth. Eat young plants, fresh greens, sprouts, immature wheat, young beets, carrots, grains, legumes, and seeds. Use pungent herbs like basil, fennel, marjoram, rosemary, caraway, dill, and bay leaf. Avoid salty foods like soy sauce, miso, and sodium rich meats, since they are heavy.

Teas: Mint with honey, dandelion

Treatments: Keep Qi circulating through vigorous exercises and sports, get sufficient sleep to avoid burnout, and practice restful activities like meditation or yoga. The liver is an important part of lymphatic drainage, so incorporate facial gua sha into your routine to encourage drainage. Facial acupuncture could also help, since it creates micro-traumas on your skin to promote collagen and healing. Acupuncture also works externally to reduce inflammation and redness, can promote a clearer and more even skin tone, remove excess heat, regulate hormones, and get rid of toxins and bacteria.

Fire

Characteristics: Associated with summer, the color red, bitter flavors, the heart and small intestines, positive emotions like joy, happiness, and love, and negative emotions like sadness, anxiety, and overjoy. When balanced, fire people tend to be passionate, warm, and charismatic, and when unbalanced, can be easily distracted or bored, prefer company to being alone, may not stick to their word, and lack joy. Physical symptoms of an imbalance include mild anxiety, difficulty sleeping, poor blood circulation, or spontaneous sweating. The heart stores Shen, which is your psycho-emotional connection to your capacity to live passionately. An imbalance of the heart-mind can result in a ruddy or very pale face.

Foods: Foods that nurture the kidney- brightly colored summer fruits and vegetables that are lightly cooked with added pungent or spicy flavors. It is important to replenish salts, minerals, and oils that are sweated out of the body with a diverse diet. Serve cooling foods like salads, sprouts- mung, soy, alfalfa, cucumber, tofu, fruits- apples, lemons, watermelon, limes.

Teas: Chrysanthemum, mint, chamomile

Treatments: On hot days, create a cool environment, like eating outside, and serve cooling foods like salads, sprouts, fruit, and cucumber. Incorporating hot-flavors brings body heat to the surface to be dispersed. With body heat on the surface, the body will be less affected by external temperatures. Use spices like red and green hot peppers, cayenne, fresh ginger, horseradish, and black pepper. On hot days, avoid heavy foods that cause sluggishness like meats, eggs, nuts, seeds, and grains. Drink enough water to keep your skin hydrated and supple. Cupping reduces heat in the body, promotes proper blood circulation, and removes toxins from the body. By placing cups along the meridians of the face instead of on the affected areas, cupping draws essential nutrients to the surface of the skin and reduces inflammation.

Earth

Characteristics: Associated with late summer, the color yellow, sweet flavors, the stomach and spleen, positive emotions like trust and openness, and negative emotions like worry and overthinking. Balanced earth people are nurturing, compassionate, loyal, empathetic, conflict resolvers, and great at forming deep and long term relationships. When unbalanced, earth people can be prone to worrying or overthinking, sensitive to criticism, and are easily taken advantage of. Physical signs of an imbalance include poor digestion, excessive burping or gas, poor appetite, cravings for sweets, blood sugar imbalances, fatigue especially around 3pm, mental fog in the morning, and poor muscle strength. Worry impairs digestion by blocking proper absorption of nutrients, causing the skin to become sallow, can create lines and wrinkles on the face, and ages the face and skin. Acne that appears on the back or chest, paired with oily skin, is believed to be caused by heat dampness in the spleen.

Food: Mildly sweet foods, yellow or golden foods, round foods, millet, corn, carrots, cabbage, garbanzo beans, soybeans, squash, potatoes, string beans, yams, tofu, sweet potatoes, sweet rice, rice, amaranth, peas, chestnuts, filberts, apricots, and cantaloupe. Prepare foods simply with minimum seasonings and mild taste.

Teas: Fennel, ginger, peppermint, jasmine, ginseng, licorice

Treatments: Add walking outside to your daily routine to energize and clear your mind through connecting with the earth. Try moving your body with exercises that will calm your mind, like meditation, yoga, or tai chi. Proper digestion and nutrition nourishes the skin internally. Those with spleen-pancreas harmony likely have a happier disposition and look younger. Facial acupuncture can help reduce wrinkles and worry lines by promoting blood flow and collagen production, which plumps and tightens the skin.

Metal

Characteristics: Associated with autumn, the color white, pungent, sour, and aromatic flavors, the lungs and large intestines, positive emotions like connection and courage, and negative emotions like sorrow and attachment. When in balance, a metal person is meticulous and efficient. They are not spontaneous, and they crave order. They are dependable, hardworking, and disciplined. When unbalanced, metal types can have difficulty opening up and sharing their feelings in close relationships, and are prone to feeling sad, misunderstood, or lonely. Physical signs of imbalance include easily catching colds and flus, shortness of breath, congested nose, constipation, dry skin, and tiredness. When the energy in the lungs is low, the skin around the nose, mouth, and neck can become pale, itchy, and dry.

Food: Appetite is stimulated through the warm fragrance of baked or sauteed foods. Add more sour foods to your diet, like sourdough bread, sauerkraut, olives, pickles, leeks, aduki beans, salt plums, vinegar, cheese, yogurt, lemons, likes, grapefruit, and the sour varieties of apples, plums, and grapes. These foods also help stimulate activity in the body, as well as heightens mental focus. Bitter and salty flavors move energy strongly inward and downward. Cook with less water, at lower heat, for longer periods of time. Add foods like tofu, tempeh, spinach, barley, millet, pear, apple, persimmon, loquat, seaweeds, black and white fungus, almond, pinenut, peanut, sesame seeds, honey, barley malt, rice syrup, milk, eggs, clam, crab, oyster, mussel, herring, and pork to combat dryness in the body.

Teas: Rose hip

Treatments: To balance metal, strengthen the lungs with exercises like qi gong. Process emotions like grief and sadness, as it strengthens lung energy, providing brightness for the complexion. Using a jade roller on the face can help combat dryness by gently working healing oils into the skin without agitating the already irritated skin.

Water

Characteristics: Associated with winter, the kidneys and bladder, positive emotions like willpower and calm, negative emotions like fear, shock, resentment, jealousy, and suspicion, able to go with the flow. When in balance, these individuals are easygoing, creative, self-reflective, artistic, have strong willpower and determination, and value wisdom. When unbalanced, feelings of self doubt and fear of failure inspire low motivation. Physical signs of an imbalance include aches in joints, the lower back, knees, or ankles, feelings of heaviness or swelling due to water retention, memory problems, hearing difficulties, or cravings for salty foods. The skin becomes drier and darker, especially under the eyes.

Food: Salty and bitter foods cool the exterior of the body and bring body heat deeper and lower, keeping the body warm. Balance salty and bitter flavors- too much salt can weaken the kidneys and bladder, causing an overconsumption of water. Eat foods like lettuce, watercress, endive, escarole, turnip, celery, asparagus, alfalfa, carrot top, rye, oats, quinoa, amaranth, black berries, blueberries, eggplant, black beans, chicory root, burdock root, miso, soy sauce, seaweeds, milley, and barley. Avoid stimulants like coffee, caffeine, and energy drinks.

Teas: Mint, ginger, dandelion

Treatments: Hydration is essential for healthy skin. Drink plenty of high quality water, take a bath, or swim in the ocean. The negative emotions associated with a kidney imbalance drain the kidney’s Qi and excess energy. By supporting the kidneys and bladder with quality hydration and proper diet, the kidneys can process emotions and gather wisdom, and keep the skin clear. Slow down, get proper sleep, and try facial gua sha. Facial gua sha supports lymphatic fluid flow, which transports oxygen and nutrients to the skin. Jade rolling de puffs, and facial acupuncture can increase blood circulation, easing the darkness around the eyes.

Face Mapping

Chinese medicine understands that all bodily functions are connected. An imbalance in one organ affects another organ, and if one bodily system is down, another is pulled with it. Yin and yang, the 5 elements, organ systems, and the meridians all work together to maintain balance and harmony within the body and mind, and face mapping is a technique and tool used to connect the dots to finding the root cause of an imbalance. Everything that is going on inside is reflected on the skin of the face. Acne, rashes, change in skin tone or color, dryness, redness, or other changes to the skin of the face directly relates to something going on inside, and can be used to address the internal problem.

Each part of the face is associated with an organ. Each side of the forehead is associated with the kidneys and bladder, between the brows pairs with the liver, under the eyes connects with the kidney and adrenals, the nose reflects the heart, the mouth and chin pairs with the stomach and colon, and the cheeks with the stomach and spleen. If you have regular blemishes occurring in the same place, consider what your skin may be trying to tell you.

Like a machine, the body depends on each part working correctly to function at its best. Understand the deeper connection between your organs and your skin, and use that to heal and flourish. Nourish yourself with a proper diet, process your emotions, and cultivate an atmosphere of peace around yourself to best bring your body into harmony. Through diet, hydration, facial modalities like acupuncture, gua sha, jade rolling, and cupping, face mapping, and knowing your element, you can heal inside to be radiant on the outside.

Spring + Liver Health

Spring is considered a time of renewal for the seasons, mind, body, and emotions. Associated with the spring season and Wood element is the liver, an organ closely connected with the flow of qi in the body. The liver is responsible for bodily functions like detoxification, bile formation and secretion, digestion and metabolism, protein metabolism, regulating hormones, and various other important functions. Liver stagnation can cause problems like neck and shoulder tension, chest tightness, teeth grinding, eye issues (especially in right eye), feeling hot all the time, fibroids, prostate inflammation, hip pain, toenail discoloration, waking up between 1 and 3 am, digestive symptoms, PMS, migraines, poor sleep, irritability, impatience or frustration, anger, or feelings of being stuck in one’s life.

Spring is an ideal time to detox your liver to support your overall health and emotions. The word detox can imply that extreme measures need to be taken, but taking this kind of action is actually hard on the body and can cause negative detox symptoms. Practices like scalp massage and combing, daily movements like walking, qi gong or yoga, eating in season, addressing stored emotions, and castor oil packs are all holistic practices that encourage good liver blood movement and relieve stagnation symptoms. The idea is to support your liver in gentle ways that flow with the slow transition to spring. For severe cases of liver illness, seek professional help to be prescribed the best course of treatment.

Scalp Massage and Combing

Scalp massage is an ancient TCM and Ayurvedic practice that involves using a wood comb or brush to gently massage the scalp. Because there are 60 acupressure points and many meridians along the scalp, this practice relaxes the mind, increases blood and oxygen flow, opens blocked channels in the head, increases qi flow, and encourages hair growth. The gallbladder meridian curves behind the ear and down the neck. An imbalance of the gallbladder meridian can result in poor quality of sleep, lack of confidence, and pain in the rib area. Because the functions of the liver and gallbladder are closely related, an imbalance of the gallbladder can affect the liver. Scalp massage is a gentle way to open energy flow along the meridian and bring the body closer to well being. The best tool to use is a wood comb, because according to the Chinese theory of the 5 Elements, wood regulates earth, which is the element associated with skin. Wood is also gentle enough to effectively activate acupoints without scraping the skin.

Gentle Exercise

Exercises like yoga, qi gong, and walking can relieve liver stagnation by increasing blood flow, improving circulation, reducing stress, and regulating blood sugar. In TCM, it is not about how hard or long you workout, but is about consistency. Working out regularly moves qi energy throughout the body, unblocks anything stagnant, and restores proper energy flow to the body. Liver qi stagnation can be caused by a sedentary lifestyle, stress, or a lack of blood flow, but working out 4-5 times a week can increase energy and blood flow in the body. Symptoms of over exerting yourself in a workout include fatigue, headaches, inability to focus, or lightheadedness, and signal that your workout is not as beneficial as it could be. Yoga, qi gong, and walking are all gentle workouts that reap all the benefits of a workout without the negative side effects. Slow and gentle movements aid the body without over exerting it.

Eating in Season

Eating in season and liver friendly foods is an effective way to support your liver while detoxing. Avoiding foods that inflame the liver, while supplying it with foods that the liver can easily process will allow the liver to function at a higher level, instead of being overworked. Along with eating fruits, vegetables, and grains that are in season, there are certain flavors and foods that suit the wood element, and support the liver. Pungent tastes like ginger, peppers, clove, garlic, clove, and allspice increase heat and digestive action in the liver. Bitter and sour foods like green tea, lemon, bitter leafy greens, zucchini, guava, pomegranate, green papaya, green apple, and herbs like parsley, dill, and mint purge the liver and increase the flow of bile to help with cleansing and elimination. Seasonal foods like artichoke, eggplant, dark leafy greens, celery, green onion, cilantro, tangerine, rhubarb, kiwi, eggs, chicken, shrimp, and brown rice will be easier for your body to digest, allowing the liver a break from working too hard. Avoid alcohol and spicy foods in excess.

Processing Emotions

Every organ has an emotion associated with it, and anger, frustration, and impatience are associated with the liver and gallbladder. These emotions can be the trigger or symptom of an imbalance in the liver, and while the emotions themselves are not inherently problematic, the repression or inward expression of these emotions can have negative somatic results. When approached with compassion, curiosity, and patience, processing feelings of anger or frustration can have an upward momentum, allowing for growth and acceptance. Because spring is the time of upward growth and expansion, it is the perfect time to address any stored emotions that might be liver qi. Ways to process emotions include lifestyle changes, movement, social connection, speaking your truth, creativity, relaxation, and rest.

Castor Oil Packs

Castor oil is a vegetable oil pressed from castor beans, and has many medicinal uses, like castor oil packs. The use of castor oil packs to aid in liver detox is an ancient practice that helps support optimized liver function, improve detoxification and hormonal balance, and to reduce inflammation in the liver. A component of castor oil, ricinoleic acid, is known to help the body rid itself of excess toxins. It is recommended to use a castor oil pack 1-2 times/week to help support the liver if dealing with hormonal imbalance, detoxification issues, or fatty liver. When treating the liver, place the pack directly over the liver, on the right side just below the rib. Often used overnight, castor oil packs are beneficial during the hours of 1-3 am, which is considered the time when the liver is most actively detoxing and is highly active. Waking up during this time might signal that your body is ready to detox and needs extra support.

Allow your body to relax into the changing season by making small changes to your routine to support your body gently. Stimulate acupressure points and the gallbladder meridian through massage, add movement to your day, eat foods that are anti-inflammatory and encourage liver detoxification, process any stored emotions, and use castor oil packs to aid in liver detoxification at night. Gentle changes can have a significant and positive impact.

Lateral Breathing and Immune Support

As we enter Autumn, TCM teaches us that now is the time to turn inward, to finish projects started in summer, to process emotions, and to get our bodies ready for winter. Autumn is associated with the lungs and intestines- the lungs are more susceptible to illness as the weather changes, and the intestines are associated with letting go of stored emotions. By practicing lateral breathing, these organs that are responsible for digestion, elimination, and immune support can be encouraged to function better because they will have room created between them and fresh blood flood to nourish them.

In the heat of the summer, our bodies experience dampness, and eliminating this dampness, especially related to the spleen, is essential to maintain health as our bodies adapt to the season change. Since the spleen fights off colds and infections, which tend to affect the body more in the colder months, supporting the organs responsible for immunity becomes essential to staying healthy. Through lateral breathing, these organs are stimulated with oxygen-rich blood, carrying nutrients directly to them so they perform their best.

What is Lateral Breathing?

Lateral Breathing is a technique used to create more space for blood and oxygen to reach important organs and tissues within the body, going deep to open up spaces that people may not even realize have become constricted. This exercise is so beneficial because it allows the diaphragm to fully expand. If not used properly, like any muscle, the diaphragm can waste away, further limiting the benefits of deep breathing. But, when done right, lateral breathing can bring the diaphragm back to life.

This technique is also beneficial for internal organs like the stomach, spleen, and pancreas, which are tucked up under the rib cage. The gallbladder and liver are close by, and the spaces between each organ are tight. If the rib cage is tight, it can choke out these other organs that digest and metabolize food for energy. By breathing to fully expand the diaphragm, the ribs are opened up, creating more space around the organs, which allows more oxygen rich blood to flow into those organs.

How to Lateral Breathe

  • Lie on your back on a flat surface and bring your knees up (keeping your knees up is crucial). If your knees are down, the diaphragm will be constricted in such a way that it will be unable to fully expand, which is the whole intention behind lateral breathing

  • Place your left hand on the left side of your belly, covering your ribs, and hold firmly

  • Begin to breathe down into the belly, like in Belly Breathing, but this time direct your breath to expand the left side out, or laterally. Use your hand as a guide as to how much that area expands

  • This exercise goes deeper than just feeling your lungs expand and ribs rise and fall, you want to feel the relaxed muscles of the ribs rising and falling due to the internal pressure of the breath.

  • This area of expansion might not have been used for some time, so this technique takes practice

  • It is important to take in more air than usual

  • Repeat the same process on the right side

  • Full Lateral Breathing is a combination of left and right breathing, and requires even more air intake. As you practice, keep holding the left and right sides to feel which area is tighter, or if it is difficult, remain calm while breathing.

Reconnecting with your Intestines

The intestines are 5+ feet of winding tissue that process food waste, and in all the twists and turns, waste can get stuck and stored. The intestines also are intrinsically connected to stress and emotions, and so it is important to allow this organ to relax, which can be done through lateral breathing. Becoming physically stressed or emotionally upset can cause your breathing to stem from the chest instead of downward into the lower ribcage and diaphragm. This constricts the twists and bends of the intestines and colon, making it very difficult to have a smooth bowel movement.

By laterally breathing with the unwinding technique, the twists and bends of the intestines and colon soften and unravel, allowing for stored materials to pass through and be eliminated from the body. Relaxing the intestines and colon is a direct way of processing emotions and stress.

Using Lateral Breathing to Connect to the Intestines

  • Lie on a comfortable surface with your knees up, and keep your shoulders and elbows relaxed, with your left elbow on the floor

  • Find the soft place between the bottom of the left rib cage and the top of the left hip bone

  • With both hands, alternately use your fingers to gently press into your skin, massaging and loosening the area

  • Move down towards the pubis, but not as low as below the navel

  • Repeat the same thing on the right side, starting below the right rib cage

  • After the area below the right rib cage is loose, work across the center to the left rib, and down to the left hip again

  • Now place your hands at a spot halfway between your right hip and navel, and massage until you feel it loosen

  • Then, connect all areas by moving from the lower right side, up to the right rib, across, down the left side towards the left hip and pelvis. Repeat as many times as it takes to feel the muscles loosen

  • This technique can be uncomfortable at first, particularly on the right side, but as you continue to unwind, it should become more comfortable

Stimulating the Digestive Organs

Lateral breathing can help make contact with the digestive organs that are tucked deep internally underneath the rib cage. Though they are too deep to make direct contact with, they can be stimulated internally by the diaphragm. This encourages the delivery of oxygen rich blood to these organs, expands the space between organs, eliminates waste and emotions, and makes room for supportive nutrients to be delivered in the fresh blood. The enhanced blood flow stimulates digestive and immune functions within your body.

Using Lateral Breathing to Stimulate the Digestive Organs

  • Starting on the left side, place your left hand on the left rib cage, and use all 4 fingers of the right hand to massage the area just below the ribs, just left of the center

  • Work the area for a while to really feel if there is any pain or discomfort

  • Move your hand all along from the bottom of the breastbone down to the last rib on the side. This area will feel similar to the area worked for the intestinal and colon lateral breathing, but this technique goes deeper to work the stomach, spleen, and pancreas

  • After a big breath, on the exhale, sneak your fingers up under the ribs and hold them there. Then, inhale and feel the ribs expand outwards. Exhale again, keeping your fingers in the same spot. Repeat this several times

  • Next, without pressing on the ribs, move your fingers downward to coax the tissue towards the navel, and repeat this until you feel the rib tissue soften

  • Repeat this technique on the right side to contact and clear the liver and gallbladder

  • Pay attention to how the tissue and skin feels, if there is pain or discomfort, and be gentle with yourself. Pay attention as well to how other parts of your body react, or if you feel any surges of energy anywhere
